In 2004, the Debian project held elections for project leaders. As part of this, people were able to ask questions of candidates.
Amaya Rodrigo Sastre asked the candidates what they were planning to do to encourage women in the Debian project.
The responses frequently harped on meritocracy, which appears to be a core value of the Debian project (even compared to other open source projects).
