Noted transgender women's rights activist and software engineer Dana NicCaluim, known at the time as Dana McCallum and formerly known as Dana Contreras, was arrested and, on January 29th, 2014, charged with 5 felonies including rape and domestic violence. At the time, NicCaliuim was a senior engineer at Twitter; she is now at Airwave.

NicCaliuim was freed on $350,000 bail and a restraining order was filed against her, keeping her away from her victim.

Defense lawyer's propagation of rape culture

NicCaliuim's lawyer John Runfola told the San Francisco Examiner that NicCaliuim's victim is a money-grubbing liar and that NicCaliuim is innocent.

Geek feminist community response

The Geek Feminism blog posted "On rape allegations and trans-misogyny" in support of the victim and also repudiating trans-misogynistic responses to the incident.

Model View Culture, for which NicCaliuim had previously written articles, removed her articles (cached link), but have not made a statement on the matter.

Trial and plea

In October 2014, NicCaliuim pled guilty to two misdemeanors and was sentenced to three years' probation.
