In April 2017, Mitchell Baker, the leader of the Mozilla project, started a thread on a public Mozilla mailing list about shared principles for the project, proposing this statement as a start:
Mozilla wishes to reconfirm our commitment to inclusion. We reconfirm or commitment to building a global community where each individual is able to bring his or her best to our shared effort of building the Internet as an global public resource. We reconfirm our core approach that people from every ethnic, religious, racial and gender identity can make positive contributions and be welcomed into the Mozilla community....
Gerv Markham (a Mozilla employee who uses the title "Governator", working on project governance, licensing and trademarks) objected to this statement on the grounds that it would make him feel disincluded as somebody who thinks transgender and transsexual people are not real.[2]
