Nymwars (sometimes also plusgate in its relationship to Google+) is an ongoing discussion in the technology industry about the use of pseudonyms on social networking sites.

Context

Nymwars was sparked by the launch of the Google+ social network and identity service, which does not allow the use of pseudonyms, or even many nicknames. See Google+ name policy debate

At almost the same time as the launch of Google+, National Geographic informed bloggers on scienceblogs.com, which it had recently purchased, that they could no longer use pseudonyms, affecting well-known science and medicine bloggers with long-standing pseudonyms. Technology and science circles thus has partially differing and partially overlapping discussions of pseudonymity.
