Suggested addition?
I feel this page should mention how female geeks have gone through the same bullying harassment male geeks were subjected to, for the same reasons, which I feel is part of the argument often forgotten by those using it to silence. I am unsure how to word it or if such an edit really belongs. EveOffline (talk) 00:05, January 31, 2013 (UTC)
- I agree with your suggestion! I don't have the personal experience needed to speak to this (I was a homeschooler growing up), but I think an edit along these lines would be great. Perhaps you could look at how *both* geeks perceived as boys, and geeks perceived as girls, get harassed for being geeks partially because they're seen as failing to do their perceived gender properly? In the first case because geekiness gets seen as in conflict with being physically strong/athletic/aggressively-heterosexual, and in the second case because it gets seen as in conflict with being sexually desirable to hetero men and with being intellectual non-threatening to the same men. And then you could go on to say that both of these things are examples of gendered stereotypes limiting people's lives, *but* the stuff directed as people perceived as female in any way (which includes young trans women and other gender-non-conforming CAMAB people) is way more violent and toxic.
