Style guideline for subsequent mentions?

I was just changing some articles (most of which I originally wrote, where I used first names because I was writing about people I knew, but there should really be a wiki editorial voice IMO) to use surnames to refer to people in subsequent mentions (that is, like: "Grace Hopper invented the compiler... Hopper was also the first to use the term 'bug' to refer to a software error" instead of "Grace Hopper invented the compiler... Grace was also the first to use the term 'bug' to refer to a software error"). I went here to check if that was mentioned in the style guidelines already, and it is, but not as a binding guideline.

I would be in favor of "use surnames in subsequent mentions" as a consistent guideline. This has the pleasant side effect of eliding the need to think about whether this is being done in an unbalanced way based on gender of referent, since if everyone gets surnames then it doesn't matter.
