ABOUT

Media Liberation Front Feminism has supported initiatives against xenophobia, homophobia, sexism and other projects for social rights and benefits. Its focus is media and public spaces and their coming project has to do with self-publishing.
For the current project, Mara Karayanni and John Colenbrander are responsible for the organization and Viki Semou for support and advice.

mlff-profile

MLFF was formed by Viki Semou and Mara Karayanni in February 2011 in order to put their work in the service of the political and cultural actions they wanted to support or initiate. Concerned not about the lack of women’s representation and reporting in the media, but about their lack in development of the medium itself – MLFF put together a media tool by women for everyone. This tool started off with a customized shopping cart and at present has taken the form of a mobile media box.

It is equipped with the following devices:

-a megaphone and a wireless microphone

-FM transmitter for radio broadcasting

-a laptop for interviews and online audio streaming

-a printer for flyers, pickets and posters

-a motor battery to fuel all above props

So far the project has participated in student demonstration in the Hague, in protests in Amsterdam against the budget cuts in social housing (SASH) and against housing speculations (Platanenweg residents initiative) in an anti-racist demonstration in Athens, and has initiated and organised the Anomalous Rally in 2013.

During the actions, people add pickets on the cart, use the megaphone for slogans, speeches and announcements. Moreover, the project aspires to address all ages and groups of people that have access to and use different technological means of communication. Therefore, existing “out-dated” media are used together with more advanced and sophisticated ones in a rather sustainable configuration.
